A tidy useable example with room for improvement.
This 1977 Ford Escort Mexico Mk2 has been with the same family for the last 16 years until us getting it. It’s a genuine Mexico which starts, runs and drives, and comes with a current MOT. It’s a decent useable example, but by no means a show car or matching numbers concours example. We have the V5 and a few receipts for work done, but not a huge amount of history.
Bodywork.
Early Mk2 shell with the big strut top holes. Has all the right brackets in the right places which look original. Solid car underneath and comes with a current MOT. Paintwork is decent and the car still presents well with no major damage or dings. It’s had a few period repairs in spare wheel wells and floors in the past. Car has a Webasto roof fitted which works ok and doesnt leak. Also had additional period security locks fitted on rear quarters. Good FORD grille, 4 cibie spotlights, good quarter bumpers. Underbonnet is the area that would probably benefit most from a tidy up. Had repairs in past on wing rails and bulkhead area and evidence of paint touch ups.
Mechanics.
Car has been upgraded to a 2.0 at some point running a Lynx manifold with single Weber 40 carb. It starts and runs well and was last used properly for a wedding last year. Prior to that it hadn’t had a lot of use over the last 10 years. Still running its original 4 speed box. Clutch and brakes are good although theres a bit of fluctuation in the brake pedal, suggesting a warped disc maybe.
Interior.
Correct white needle RS clocks which all work. Good dash top, original uncut door cards. Good headlining. Seats are original but driver’s side bolster needs a repair as seen in pics. Period 8 ball gearknob.
Wheels.
5 x Mexico deep dish steels with good Yokohama A539 tyres. One centre cap is missing.
Our thoughts.
This is a tidy, useable old car, but if you want a show winner, remember, they are nearly double the cost of this one. You are welcome to come and see the car.
